Poppies are often used to honor the pain and sorrow of war, but they’re such beautifully vibrant flowers that I never wanted them to feel only heavy or sad.
In this painting, I filled the scene with butterflies, inspired by the idea that they can represent the spirits of loved ones—lightly moving around us, as if to reassure us not only that they’re okay, but they are happy and thriving.
I wanted the whole piece to feel playful and light… almost like if you stepped close enough, you could smell spring in the air.
